Wordpress L&D

I’ve been a bit quiet on my blog recently, partly due to lack of inspiration, partly because I have been working on another project. So, I figured I would write up a quick post on what I’ve been up to.

The launch of the new-look PhoebeC

My girlfriend has had a website for close to a year now, but recently embarked on a refresh to bring it into line with what she feels the look should be. You can see the end result here: PhoebeC

This was my first attempt at a Wordpress theme, and it was as simple as you would expect. There were a couple of things that made the job slightly more complex, namely the fact the the “UnPC” category has a different style. Getting over this hurdle was just a matter of  reading the Wordpress API and finding the right finctions to use. From there it was just getting plugins and settings configured to complete the job.

The Etsy Widget

As part of the process above, we wanted a widget that could display Etsy favourites. This was easy enough to find a solution, but it relied on javascript to insert an iframe to display the content off etsy.com. This resulted in a widget that just didn’t quite fit in to the theme, and customising how it looked was difficult. So, being bored at work I decided to adapt another Etsy widget to do the job.

I’m still waiting for the Etsy Developers to approve my production API key application, so I haven’t got it in production as yet. Once approved, I will upload to the Wordpress plugins repository and update this post to show it in action.

There are still a few changes I would like to make, but I’m really happy with how 1.0 turned out. And I learnt a bit in the process, which is always a good thing!

Update: The widget is now live on Wordpress.com

Now I just need to find something else to keep me occupied…
